V15 - Oh What a Night

PDF Print E-mail

By Eunice Phipps

The jolly little man in the red suit and hat
Adjusted his belt as he stepped onto the mat
He turned to his task and what did he spy
But a bottle of beer and a yummy mince pie

He looked all around, there was no one to see
So he kicked off his boots and sat on the settee
The bottle of beer went down like a treat
He slipped off his socks to let some air on his feet

He chewed on the pie with a smile on his lips
He thought of the weight this night put on his hips
On a table nearby there were lollies and cakes
He opened his pockets so some he could take

He went about his work not making a sound
Then turned to the chimney, had a quick look round
Saw his socks and his boots were still sitting alone
In the corner of the room near the puppy’s new bone

He donned boots and socks then nodded his head
Up the chimney he shot, then jumped in his sled
He called to his team but he’d forgotten their names
So he cried out lets go -  they weren’t playing the game

So he waved and he shouted he swore and he cursed
But the reindeer stood waiting they needed the verse
His magic words were required to lift them on high
And they turned their heads sky ward and let forth a sigh

They were stuck fast on the roof top, could not move a foot
They looked at their master he was still covered in soot
The reindeer in front with the bright shiny red nose
Turned to the others, asked -  anyone know how it goes?

They chorused together the words we all know
Their names they all shouted but still couldn’t go
They stood there and waited but nothing would work
Then Rudolf he cheered and turned his head with a jerk

Hey you in the red suit our feet have turned numb
And if you don’t get us moving we’ll soon melt in the sun
Our sleigh is still heavy and the toy sacks still full
Remember the verse or you can get out and pull.

And they heard him exclaim as they rose out of sight
Merry Christmas my friends I hope you got the verse right.
