V14 Full cost recovery means?

PDF Print E-mail
  Most of the more highly remunerated marriage celebrants think .. "Well $600 is only one wedding"

However full cost recovery means - the more competition the fee removes, the higher the fee independent celebrants wil need to pa.

 Number of independent celebrants
 Percentage needed to be removed
 Fee per celebrant to raise $ 4.2 million
Current number 10,000+ None $ 420 pa
9000 10% $ 466 pa
 7000  30 %
$ 600 pa
 5000
 50%  $ 840 pa
 3000  70 %
 $ 1400 pa
If the fee were applied to ALL marriage celebrants
Approx.  35,000  none  $ 120 pa

It also means:

  • less choice
  • much higher fees

for the marrying public.

The effect will be to:

  • push the marrying public back to the churches and to the Registry Offices
  • increase the divide between the poor and rich in our country
  • undermine the orginal intent of the Civil Marriage Program which was to provide a meaningful alternative (not a higher cost elite service) to the churches and to the Registry Offices.

    A cost barrier of this magnitude will make churches and to the Registry Offices so much more accessible.
