Ask a Celebrant

V10 Trusting the process

PDF Print E-mail
ronaG2AAAAI often suggest that couple write a few lines of appreciation for the other, as a lead into their Vows. Indirectly really a statement about "how it is THIS person" with whom you have chosen to spend the rest of your life ?

The couple are asked to email (or phone) me privately so I may prepare these on cards, and make sure their memento copy of the ceremony will include these few special words too.

I've had some beautiful and very touching pieces, so I was a little taken back when one of my grooms sent:

Lisa, since we met each other it has been pissing down continuously,
However
Not only have I learned to dance in the rain with you
but I have learnt to swim in the puddles.
U can now take your foot off my head
As I am here for you always

They were a delightful couple with a great sense of humour.  Some much so, that I was concerned that I would be too "straight" as their celebrant, and that I may not live up to their expectations. I'm one of those people who can never remember the punch line, even if I wanted too!

When I shared this anxiety, the groom's respone was most reassuring .... "Goodness no ! We don't want a celebrant like us - the ceremony would be all over the place.

In the end I decided to bite my tongue and "trust the process". I was relieved to be sent the bride's words a few days later:

Joseph, there are many reasons why I want to marry you here are just a few

1. you are thoughtful and kind to Ella and I
2. You are funny and you have this great big loud laugh that only a woman who loves you could love ....
oh and your mother
3. You run your own race
4. you have these cute little routines and habits that annoy but wouldn't want you to change
5. you dance with me in the rain, soak with me in the sunshine
6. Most importantly, you get me!

Last but not least - gotta love that Scottish accent and love a bloke in a skirt (kidding a kilt)

You are awfully cute and you give great feet massages !!

And as for the exchange in the day ... it was simply brillant!

Does this photo not say it all ?
