V9 Marion's First Wedding

PDF Print E-mail
My name is Marion Atkins and I am a relatively new  celebrant. I just want to tell you (and the ACCN members) a little story. An experience  that I  found  to be one of the most fulfilling, and the most proudest thing I will ever do as a celebrant. My first wedding..............We all have our stories of our first wedding, it is something that none of us will forget I am sure.

My first wedding consisted of two lovely, in love people. They had previously been married to each other for thirty odd years and had divorced and lived in separate houses in separate suburbs for ten years. They had remained friends during this time, attending family functions, seeing each other on a regular basis as their family was quite large. This couple even went on a few holidays together, one of which the gentleman proposed to his lovely lady who he had divorced many years earlier. This all sounds complicated, the NOIM for me as a new celebrant was a nightmare, the lady had the same name as the gentleman, as she had kept her married name. They both had the same children from their previous marriage, their divorce papers were the same as each other’s.  It was all very complicated to say the least.

On the day of the wedding the gentleman was so nervous he had to take a walk to calm down. The lovely lady, well she had spent months preparing for this day. Fittings, make up trials, hairdo trials, more fittings.  Her wedding day was so planned out and every effort was made to have every minute detail just perfect.

I wrote the ceremony for them, they didn’t want it to be a young people’s ceremony, or too lovey dovey. There were many restrictions and many instructions given about exactly what they wanted in their ceremony. When I sent the ceremony to them via email they both cried and phoned me back telling me it was exactly what they wanted.

So the big day came. It rained, which was not good as they wanted to be married in the garden at the estate they had chosen. However they were lucky there was a plan B and they were married in the ball room of the estate.

The guests consisted of  family and a few close friends, about fifty people. I performed the ceremony  in a lovely room, where you could feel the atmosphere was so loving. The groom could hardly get his words out he was so nervous. The bride could hardly be heard, she was so overwhelmed. Afterwards the reception was held.   Everything was perfect.

marion2All this meant so much to me. I was so proud, so very glad for the couple.

I felt really lucky to have been a part of the ceremony. This lovely couple that I performed my first ceremony for were my mother and father.

I will never forget this experience.  How lucky am I?

Just thought you would like to hear my story.

Kindest Regards

Marion Atkins
