The new Certificate IV in Celebrancy offers celebrants an opportunity of doing units for providing ceremonies wherein the major components are:
- mourning loss
- honouring life
- story telling
- encouraging family and community support
- dealing with life changes
The main ceremonies of this type are funerals and memorials.
Celebrant training units in the Certificate IV related to funerals are:
- CHCS426A Provide support and care relating to loss and grief
This unit describes the knowledge and skills required to provide support for individuals who are experiencing loss, grief and bereavement.
- SIFIND001A: Work effectively in the funeral services industry
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify the general structure of, and stakeholders within, the funeral services industry and to comply with workplace requirements.
- SIFFNL009A Plan and conduct a funeral ceremony
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare for and perform a funeral ceremony according to the needs of clients. This unit applies to funeral-conducting staff and involves working autonomously with a high level of responsibility. It requires the application of planning and communication skills to develop and deliver effective funeral ceremony speeches.
- SIFFNL003A Arrange funerals
- CUSMPF04A: Prepare self for performance
This unit covers the technical and creative skills developed through rehearsal and private practice. It deals with planning and continual performance evaluation, repertoire knowledge and the application of OHS principles.
The first 3 Units are offered by most Registered Training Organisations (RTO) with principals with a history as celebrants themselves.
International College of Celebrancy tailors SIFFNL003A Arrange funerals specifically from a celebrant perspective, and QUALTRAIN offers the unit - CUSMPF04A: Prepare self for performance - in conjunction with its funeral celebrant training.
The following information was provided in response to the ACCN's request for information.

QUALTRAIN WA
Following consultation with Funeral Directors at the WA AFDA Conference 2010, QualTrain’s Principal, Carol Astbury, is convinced of the need for celebrants, particularly funeral celebrants, to deliver the service with confidence and professional presentation. In order to assist funeral celebrants to prepare themselves for delivery, QualTrain includes the unit CUSMPF04A Prepare self for performance.
These are the four units QualTrain recommends for funeral celebrancy training:
- CHCS426A Provide support and care relating to loss and grief
- SIFIND001A: Work effectively in the funeral services industry
- SIFFNL009A Plan and conduct a funeral ceremony
- CUSMPF04A: Prepare self for performance
This combination works very well
The units are clustered to provide this quality training and assessment; cost for the four units:
Option One: Delivered face-to-face (five days including a field trip to crematorium, lawn & monumental cemeteries, funeral home) $800 (GST free).
Option Two: Part self-paced learning / plus two days face-to-face (including fieldtrip as above) $600 (GST free)
Recognised Prior Learning is a very complex system – and involves written assessment, questionnaire (written or oral), performance checklists, supplementary evidence (workplace documents, third party evidence)
Registration fee = $200 Fee per UOC = $60 Direct credit transfer (existing UOC) per unit = $10
Other information: QualTrain offers small group, face-to-face training – delivering to groups numbering 4 (minimum) to 9 (maximum). This provides a quality learning environment, where QualTrain can be sure that individual needs are addressed.
