Bayside Civil Marrage Celebrant Laurel Donaldson

Appointed September 2008

As I neared retirement age I considered: `What will I do in retirement?’  The answer was `Do something positive and useful’ – hence my decision to become a celebrant, a decision I have not regretted.

My career spanned secretarial support roles and then human resources and training.  I also spent 14 years in the most fantastic Rotary Club where I had the privilege to be the President which gave me the confidence to pursue being a civil celebrant.

My aim as a celebrant is to make the wedding experience relaxed, stress free and fun, while maintaining the dignity and importance of marriage.

Living at Raby Bay in Queensland, I am fortunate to live on a canal where I am able to perform elopements and small intimate ceremonies.  Some of these have been the most moving as these couples are only interested in their love for each other without all the fuss.

Families come in all shapes and sizes and a particular memorable ceremony came with the couple, and in their own words, `We have a strange request, we want to include Ralph in our ceremony’.  Having a relaxed approach I said no problem and then I met Ralphy, a wonderful Labrador dog.  He didn’t quite steal the show but came a close second to the bride, with his tie and rose buttonhole.

Since I was appointed 3 years ago, I have absolutely no regrets as I continue to have wonderful experiences and still get a lovely warm feeling when I see the happiness of the couple and their families at a successful wedding.
