Wollongong Civil Marriage Celebrant Steve Parson - Appointed 2008

My background is in the media. Mainly radio and TV. I still work in radio as a casual presenter with the ABC in Wollongong.

During my career I hosted the number one breakfast show in the Illawarra on 2WL/Wave FM for over 20 years. I was also the breakfast and drive host on 2GB in Sydney, worked at TCN 9 in Sydney and was a news and sport presenter on Prime TV. During my TV days I hosted telethons as well.

I have been the Master of Ceremonies at hundreds of events spanning over 40 years including the 2000 Olympic Torch Relay, various Carols By Candlelight, community, corporate and sporting events. Public speaking is one of my passions and I have delivered numerous addresses to various organisations,  over the years.

Married with 4 adult children and 3 grandchildren, I came to celebrancy through my family. I have been the celebrant at several family funerals and more recently naming days. Quite a few relatives suggested that I should make my skills and abilities more available.

I have been a registered marriage celebrant since 2008 but it’s only been this year (2011) that I have decided to pursue it as I have reduced my radio work.

Being a celebrant is very rewarding. I remember a wedding I did recently at Killalea State Park. It was 9 am on a Sunday, the sun was sparking on the surface of a beautiful blue sea, the bride and groom were obviously devoted to each other, the wedding ceremony went off perfectly and I thought to myself “What a wonderful way to use my ability to make others happy.”

My tip, if you are planning a ceremony, engage a celebrant then do exactly that. Plan it. Proper planning in the preparation and presentation of your event is essential. I am more than happy to spend the time with couples  that is needed to ensure an occasion that is meaningful and memorable.
