Queensland celebrant Annette Oastes  - Appointed  2008

I have no simple explanation of what makes a good celebrant but I believe what makes me successful is my passion for what I do, the pleasure I gain from delivering a service which fulfils requirements and where possible actually exceeds expectations.

I’m not brilliant at anything. I love to paint but I’ll never create a masterpiece; I love to write but I’ll never make the best seller list; I love theatrics but I’d never make Broadway.

My feet are firmly on the ground when it comes to the realities of life but my heart and mind are far from earthbound when it comes to my ambition to create a memorable ceremony.

Dreams are mysterious, whimsical things, often without rhyme or reason even to the dreamer. My dream has been in the developmental stages since the year 2000 when I delivered my first memorial piece at the funeral of a dear friend. It was a modest start with a long and challenging road ahead but my journey had begun.

Back then, I had what I often hear others describe as ‘a real life’. After fifteen years in the airline industry, I’d started a new career in emergency services where I monitored personal alarm for disabled, aged or endangered persons. But working 12 hour shifts 24/7 didn’t fit well with studies so in 2005, with the support and encouragement of my husband, I took a leap of faith, quit my ‘real life’ and began to live my dream.

I was still learning the skills of general celebrancy and wasn’t entirely convinced I could successfully qualify to become a marriage celebrant but it did happen and finally, in 2008, I was rewarded with my appointment as an Authorised Marriage Celebrant.

Now days, my ‘real life’ is Celebrancy which goes hand in hand with my second favourite pastime – travel. Not all dreams are achievable but wherever you are and wherever you want your dream to take you, as long as it’s within the Commonwealth of Australia, I just may be able to help you find your reality.

I have a strong background in customer service from my time with the airline and later in the field of emergency response. In both these environments I was able to utilise the many and diverse skills I gained as an Army Reservist.

Through this background, combined with a compassionate and caring nature, I’ve developed strong skills in communication as well as leadership and risk management, making me not only a good follower when it comes to taking instructions but also reliable, thorough and discreet.

My hobbies have included sailing, sky diving, bush walking, creative writing, floral arranging, visual arts, horse riding, fishing…

These days when I’m not working on a ceremony I give my time as an active Fire Fighter and Community Educator with the Rural Fire Service.

I love the call of the wild – but what I’m really hanging out for is the next call from a Bride- (or Groom) to-be.
