Forster celebrant Joseph Court  - Appointed 2nd April 1995

Joe_CourtInitially I trained as a Linotype operator in the printing industry, then changed to journalism on country newspapers. I was editor of papers at Scone, Quirindi and Moss Vale, before being appointed as a State Ministerial press secretary. Later I was the Premier's press secretary in 1975-76.

I knew a couple of civil celebrants and looked with interest at what they were achieving. Then I applied for appointment and was successful after three years of waiting.. Primarily I was looking for something that was more than just a hobby, and have certainly achieved that.

My treasured memory is about when I was engaged for a Namegiving Ceremony for the two small children of a couple I married about five years before. Rain pushed the ceremony into their home, and I assumed I would not need my amplifier. When I called for order, all the adults went silent, and there was still a gentle, delightful buzz of small talk and laughter from all of the children who were scattered amongst the guests. It sounded just wonderful and was a meaningful illustration of what celebrants like to add to life.

My suggestion to brides is in regard to weddings and the timing of the ceremony.

  • Make a commitment that you and your bridal party will be on time.
  • Stress the need for punctuality with your  photographer, your car driver, all members of your wedding party.
  • Understand that being half an hour late is not a traditional or expected part of the wedding.
  • Nothing browns people off more than having to wait and wait, and so spoils everyone's enjoyment of the day.
