Many thanks to Peter for providing his snapshot Peter Leach
Appointed January 1995 I served in the Navy and Air Force for a total 24 years, with a background in communications and administration. On taking early discharge from the RAAF, I managed Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for a year, then being sick of seeing other people going out sailing, took a sabbatical of 2 years to do just that. Then needing a job, I became a funeral director. Fifteen years later, I was able to take early retirement and draw a Service Pension. A workmate had applied for appointment as a Marriage Celebrant - it seemed like something I would like to do - so I applied too. I was appointed on 18 January 1995 (A3361), and conducted my first wedding on 7 October of that year. I have enjoyed a wonderful fifteen years of celebrancy - the best part is being contacted by a couple I married and asked to officiate at the naming of their children - for two of my couples, I have named three children! In five years time I hope to be still vertical! However, with the increasingly onerous requirements of the Marriage Celebrants Section, I doubt if I will still be celebrating then (apart from my advanced years!). A treasured memory? Where to start - they've all been so good! I can't recall a wedding I haven't enjoyed. Probably the best was an autumn wedding on the beach at Tangalooma, late afternoon with the setting sun shining across Moreton Bay with a string quartet playing, and the quartet, bridal party guests and I in bare feet. I got back to Brisbane the following morning! The worst was being contacted by a tearful bride the day following her wedding to ask for an annulment - bride and groom had a serious disagreement at the reception, supported by their respective families, and left in opposite directions (but I did enjoy the wedding)!
