Many thanks to Patricia for providing her profile. Central Coast NSW Patricia Rixon - Appointed 2nd September 2008What attracted me to become a celebrant? I was born in the little town of Gunnedah on the beautiful Liverpool Plains on the north west of NSW. I lived a great deal of my life in the country and regional NSW, with six exciting years in the USA from ‘84 to ‘90. My first job out of school was in a Silk store where I worked in the wedding materials section. Surrounded by beautiful laces and satins it never occurred to me that I would one day work closely in the wedding industry as a celebrant. In fact if asked I probably didn’t know what a celebrant was as they certainly where not the norm in those days. Being married in the registry office was certainly not the done thing in the country.
Over the last few years it has been my absolute pleasure to work with many young and not so young beautiful people as they plan their weddings and special events. My first wedding was in February 2009. It happened to be a beautiful young woman I had worked with several years before. She knew I was relatively new to the world of Celebrancy but she trusted and believed in me and between us and her lovely partner we created a beautiful wedding day. Time passed and recently she told me that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and I was devastated for her as I had just recently seen my own beautiful daughter go through a terrible twelve months as a victim of Breast cancer. I was honoured in the last few weeks to be invited to a fund raiser and breast cancer awareness afternoon tea at my bride’s home. It made me realised how much you become part or your wedding couples life as they go through the joys and tribulations of building a life and family and how it is not just about the wedding. I hope that as time goes by and I conduct and deliver more ceremonies, be they weddings, funerals and baby naming that my love of the industry will continue to grow and that I can be regarded as a excellent example of a highly professional, caring celebrant who enjoys her job and cares about her profession and the people she meets.

Having a milestone birthday and talk of retirement seemed to be creeping more and more into my thoughts and conversations so I started to look around and see what I could do to ease into retirement. I felt just way too young at heart to call it quits just yet. So what to do?
