Wayne Smith Authorised Marriage Celebrant - Appointed September 2006

I live in the Perth foothills in a bushland setting with my wife Patricia, our staffy named Kojack and 3 red chooks, plus birds, possums, bats and bees. We have two grown up boys and three grandchildren. Now retired I can slow down a little bit and enjoy life with whatever comes my way on the day.

My background has been in Engineering working in Perth and in the Pilbara for BHP. Since leaving the mining sector I took up teaching for a while, then moved my career to management and senior management with the Education Department in Western Australia.

Back in 1992 I become a Justice of the Peace and enjoyed the voluntary work in Court. However, I now tend to restrict my duties to less legal obligations working from home.

During my working life at the Education Department and a few years out of retirement as a Director, the usual question was “ Wayne what are you going to do with yourself when you retire?”.  I did not really want to commit to anything at the time as my working positions meant that I usually work up to 16 hours per day and set to tight schedules and deadlines. I just really wanted to take life as it comes along an enjoy the people who I associate with.

A colleague of mine at work had applied to become a marriage celebrant and was refused his appointment. I was a bit put back by this and had a look at the duties and pathways to become a marriage celebrant. I thought to myself this look like a great retirement career after life at the Education department.

Had look on the net, found a range of providers and enrolled in the marriage celebrant course. I passed the course, applied to become a celebrant and waited 12 months or more to get my registration.

Well, that was the beginning and I needed to set up the small business. Anyway I got my website up, produced a set of wedding resources.

I will never forget my 1st wedding with a couple from the UK who came here to get married. I think I put in about 50 hours preparation and numerous practices  in the mirror. The ceremony was perfect and I think we all had a tear or two at the ceremony as it was so special.

With a job that started out as a “look and see job”  I absolutely enjoy being a marriage celebrant.

I dedicate enormous hours for each wedding to make it individual and special for the bride, groom, parents and guests. I enjoy the meetings where we all discuss the elements of the wedding and the content and variations to the ceremony. It gives me great pleasure, when someone at the ceremony comes up to me and thanks me for making the day so memorable. I think this is the primary reason for me to maintain my role  as a celebrant

In 5 years time, I hope to still be enjoying marrying people, performing baby namings, vow renewals and other ceremonies  as a Marriage Celebrant but also helping others from my experience.
