Naja Voorheve Geelong Authorised Marriage Celebrant - Appointed September 2007

Thank you for the invitation to make a contribution. I think you do great work on our behalf so I am submitting this in the spirit of making your web pages lively and successful!

I grew up in Ireland – some people pick this straight away, others aren’t sure until my sense of humour comes across. OK, now we’re sure – that’s black alright.

I knew I wanted to be a celebrant the day I heard Judy Watt – the former convenor of the Monash Celebrancy degree - speak on the radio about the work that celebrants do.

It was the first time I had heard of a job I could actually do and wanted to do with my particular skill set. It’s not that my sense of humour precludes my engaging in certain occupations, rather that I have specialised areas of interest: the classics and religions (west and east).

As it happened these interests were honed at university and as such there is no place for me as a religious (unless there’s a church for atheists? Maybe Philip Adams will start one some day…) so becoming a marriage celebrant seemed like a great option. And, since we are being frank with each other here, there are just not enough occasions in Australian society to get frocked up. I just love frocking up. Too bad none of it is tax deductible

Where do I want to be in five years time? Unfortunately if I said right here, doing exactly the same thing that would mean I was going backwards – but really things are great. I keep it small, keep it real. Not too many appointments, no frazzled dashes from one wedding to the next. I have time to really write those ceremonies. I was only appointed in 2009 so I guess I am still a bit green but at least I know I will only improve! Being a celebrant can be a bit of a trap sometimes – you sometimes forget that your job is not about being liked so I try to take the greatest satisfaction from what I bring to the table. Sigh, I’m not Johnny von Goes: I can’t ad lib and have never been good at improvising but I can write.

And all my favourite memories are of that great feeling of having described the closest emotions of a tender couple, broadcast them across a billowing marquee to a cast of hundreds and know that you said what they needed you to say.

Kind Regards,
