Beverley Travis Gympie Authorised Marriage Celebrant - Appointed September 2008

My name is Beverley Travis and I live in Gympie Queensland with my husband of 39 years, Max (together with our menagerie of various species). We laughingly refer to our new home (in distance i.e.) as being $3-400,000 less, north of Brisbane and west of Noosa. It’s tranquil and picturesque and we moved here from Brisbane just as my registration came through in late 2008. We had a lot to contend with at the time – a house move, a death in the family and notification that a beautiful nephew was terminally ill.
BeverleyS We had monetary as well as lifestyle reasons for moving. A business we had conducted for eleven years, seven days a week, left us bereft financially, physically and emotionally. Perhaps it was a journey we had to have despite everything and we met some wonderful people and had the privilege of caring for man’s best friends, and varied other species – yes, it was a Pet Shop.

Prior to starting our business I worked as a PA. I now quietly reflect that I might just have been a very square peg in a very round hole. However, I gained some very useful typing skills and segued from manual typewriters in the 60s through to the electric variety and on to the first word processors in the 90s. The IT world we now live in has been both a source of wonder and frustration for one who did not grow up with it. Sometimes I think I will metamorphose into something of a social pariah if I don’t get the balance right.

As our business came to an end I was looking for some sort of involvement in the community – even better if I got paid! Being a romantic and having a girly gene, I had a lightbulb moment, some might call it an epiphany, that Celebrancy might hold a host of attractive elements for me. I participated in a course in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley moderated by Lana Frost. It was a most enjoyable experience and our small group gleaned a plethora of information from Lana who has many years of practical experience.

In a small way I think I have satisfied my romantic bent, in another a penchant for writing. My fervent wish is to have empathy for my clients’ heart’s desire and then produce and deliver a ceremony they will cherish. I find as I go along that I am becoming more and more dedicated to my craft. I am constantly sourcing and archiving material (both head and filing cabinets). I am putting my heart and soul into the ceremonies I conduct (and in between). It really satisfies a host of latent pursuits I wish I had put into practice years ago. I have an ardent wish that people find me approachable , caring and sensitive. On the other side of the coin, hamming it up has never been a problem. A well developed sense of humour and a deep respect for human relationships in all their diversity is paramount in my dealings with others. I believe that laughter is the main source of happiness in our world.

Business has been slow to start but bearing in mind that the pundits say any business usually takes three years to establish buoys me somewhat. In five years’ time I hope , apart from still earnestly wishing to be on the planet, that I will be sought after and conducting more ceremonies. I am mentally fit and agile, could be more physically fit but I’m tactile. Don’t believe me when I say I don’t care if I am not monetarily fit. I do want to make a pile and sail down the aisle ooops not again – the Nile !!

Cheers, Beverley Travis.
