Macedon celebrant Susan May Authorised Civil Celebrant - Appointed March 2009

SusanMay
Having been raised in a large and very happy family, and raising my own family of five children, I have a fairly good grip on what marriage and family are all about.  Busy, yes, but change anything? No.

Ceremony was a part of our life, even down to a tiny Funeral service in our vege garden, for a kitten of which my sister and I had grown very fond.  (My dad was a lay preacher).

In more recent years, I have worked in a Psych Geriatric Nursing Home (Administration) until 4 months ago, when I semi retired, gained Diplomas in Counselling and Family Therapy, as well as in Funeral Celebrancy, became a Civil Marriage Celebrant, and over the  past 19 years became a Nana to nine beautiful grandchildren.

One could say I have been busy.
Celebrancy is something that I had thought about for quite a long time, but was put off by the suggestions that I would have to wait years for registration. That meant, I probably wouldn’t be registered before I was Nursing Home bound myself.  I saw it, and still see it, as a beautiful and noble profession, and as a service to people, to help them make their dream day a reality.  As soon as I learned that there was a possibility of a much shorter wait, I aimed for it, and did the Marriage, Funeral and Life Celebrations courses, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Here I am now, sitting at my laptop, writing my profile, as a registered Marriage Celebrant of almost 7 months (26th March 2009), and about to do my very first Wedding, with another one booked for next month.

I was honoured to perform my first ceremony in August this 2009, not a wedding, but a naming ceremony for my niece’s baby boy.  Not only was it a great experience for me, and receiving some great feedback, it was an opportunity to independently present a ceremony format that I had adapted from several examples, along with some of my own ideas, to make this day a beautiful memory for my niece, her partner and both families.  It also gave me the experience of performing ceremony for familiar people, as well as those who I had never met before.  That is my treasured memory, and I certainly wasn’t nervous!!

I see myself in 5 years time, and beyond, a more experienced celebrant, and fully enjoying myself.
