Central Coast celebrant Vicki James Authorised Civil Celebrant - Appointed September 2007

I have had such a diverse career and seem to have spent half my life studying to gain the qualifications needed to work in the areas I have.

My career started in the banking industry in the 70’s.  I worked in administration first learning that side of the job than moved out to branch banking and worked my way up the ladder to accountant.  I left the NAB when I felt the banking industry lost its personal touch with customers and it became just ‘the big 4 banks’.

I then moved into accounting and tax return preparation.  I then started working with aged people and people with a disability, both physical and mental in social support and criminal justice.  I also worked shifts as a telephone counsellor for Lifeline.

On Tuesdays I worked as a support worker for women affected by domestic violence at the local Court House because that was when AVO’s were heard.

All my jobs during my life have been about working with people one on one and giving service to others so it was an obvious choice.  I had been married by a Celebrant myself in the 80’s and was quite disappointed with what I had received.  I then saw other weddings done by Celebrants and was most impressed with what I saw.  I am a people person.  I thought I had something special to give others.  I did a course on Namings, Renewal of Vows, Commitment Ceremonies and Funerals first at my Community College.  This then led me to enrol in a course to become a Marriage Celebrant.

I was appointed 20 September 2007 after applying for my registration in November 2006.  I still remember the last day where our class had to individually perform the wedding ceremony and we had turns at being bride, groom, bridesmaid, best-man, and of course Celebrant.

One of my early weddings was for a couple who worked in a sheltered workshop together.  They lived together and with their families blessing wanted to marry.  They both understood what marriage meant.  It was a small wedding.  There was no wedding dress, flowers, official photographer or wedding car.  Just the love, devotion and care between two people.

Hopefully in good health and able to continue doing my Celebrant work.
