Melbourne celebrant Wally (Walter) Soltys Authorised Marriage Celebrant - Appointed May 2000

A musician since a young boy, I played around Melbourne for various dinner dances, balls, cabarets, wedding receptions etc while also working in heavy construction for over 20 years.

I ceased heavy construction – was employed as an MC and resident musician in a restaurant / wedding reception centre for over 10years.

During these 10 years at the reception centre, I had seen many wedding ceremonies, many marriage celebrants and was encouraged to apply to become a marriage celebrant. The encouragement came from the owner of the reception centre, staff and many couples whose wedding receptions I MC’d.

Many couples I spoke with were a bit disappointed with their marriage celebrant as they really didn’t know they had much choice back then.

After some thought, I applied and was delighted when authorized in May 2000.

I plan to continue being a small but most important part of a couple’s wedding day for as long as I possibly can.

I take my legal role seriously – however that doesn’t mean I take myself so seriously as to not be able to have a laugh or two during a wedding ceremony.

My reception centre experience taught me that today, it’s OK to take a calm, relaxed approach towards a wedding ceremony.

It doesn’t need to be the solemn, formal, serious, stiff, prim & proper occasion that I had witnessed for many years.

I performed a ‘scuba diving’ wedding ceremony a few years ago.

Not something I had ever planned to do but I was absolutely amazed and thrilled at being able to perform a ceremony exactly where the couple wanted.

Of course we are serious were we need to be, we are getting married – that’s pretty serious stuff - but there is always room for some humour and the occasional laugh.

I know I do it right when parents and grandparents make the comment:

“Thank you for an excellent ceremony.
We had the serious, but you were able to inject some humour throughout the ceremony as well. A respectable, sensible ceremony – thank you”
