Skye celebrants Karen Wilmot - Appointed 9th December 2003

What attracted me to become a celebrant?

There were many things that attracted me to Celebrancy; I love writing, reading, knowing all the details and have an attention to detail. Also, my Uncle is a religious minister and has performed most of the weddings within my family, and I observed his obvious enjoyment of being involved in these special occasions.

Like many others I enquired about becoming a celebrant many years ago and found that it wasn’t possible at the time, not to be deterred I enquired every year until the news of the training criteria. I was determined to do the course, which I did, and was appointed in the first wave of appointments in late 2003. I was so excited.

I performed my first wedding in January 2004, and knew instantly that this was what I was meant to do in life. I enjoyed every aspect of it and still do. For me, it really is the best job in the world! I have met so many interesting people from all walks of life, who have shared with me the details of how they met and their own personal love stories. Along the way, I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting many other celebrants.

In 2008, I completed a funeral course, which was extremely informative, practical and useful. I am not actively seeking funeral work but have been asked several times to perform a funeral by friends. At the time, I didn’t feel confident enough to perform these ceremonies, now with the knowledge and resources that I have built up, I feel that I would now be able to perform a funeral with the empathy, sincerity and confidence that is required. I see performing funerals as not being something every celebrant can or should do. For now, I am happy to concentrate on weddings.

In 5 years time I would like to be one of the best celebrants in the industry, and still enjoying it as much as I do now.
