Ballarat celebrant Kaye O'Donovan - Commenced celebrancy March 2003

My professional background is in the Fashion and Model Industry of which I am still listed as a mature-aged model. I have owned and run a Model and Talent Agency and assisted in a Regional-based Deportment and Model School. Encouraging young adults and also the more mature aged men and women to pursue their dreams and goals in life whether it is in this industry or in the corporate sector or simply returning to the workforce after raising children.  It has been a real buzz and delight to have assisted some of our local folk achieve in the Television arena.

I am a wife, mother and grandmother of 8 fine grandchildren.

I have been a celebrant since March 2003.

The transition to being a Celebrant has been another wonderful and exciting journey, encouraged by my Celebrant friend/ mentor who suggested I had what was needed to becoming a celebrant, a good people person, a listener and that touch of confidence.

I have officiated numerous ceremonies over these past six years, each one has been very personal and meaningful for the families involved and it has been a real learning curve for me. Some of my families have been children that went to school with my children and are now grown adults and have babes of their own.  I am always very appreciative and humbled when I am asked back into a family to name another new member, it’s great to see how the other siblings have grown and developed. I really enjoy what I’m doing and have been told “You look like you love your job”.

That sums it up for me!

A memorable time? I had the pleasure of naming a dear little baby who had downs syndrome, he was so tiny, not yet showing the signs of his condition, sleeping peacefully, contented in the arms of his mum.

I managed to catch up with him again two years later at one of his cousin’s naming. He played happily with the other kids not a care in the world. I became quite friendly with this family having named 6 family members over a period of time.  Sadly this happy little man lost his life, battling a chest infection that worsened.  I attended his “Wiggle’ funeral and we sang and clapped to the music of this popular children’s group. I took away the smiling face of this little boy into my heart and made sure I visited and extended some comfort to his mum and other family members.

On a lighter side had a great family that I returned four times to name their babes and on the last child, Rob came out with a big bottle of champagne, “Kaye”, He said,” thank you for looking after our family, we love you and would like to give you this gift, but we don’t want to see you again….this is definitely the last one!! “

I have always found being myself and taking others as they are has been a great lesson, our residential address has no bearing on the type of person we are, and I’ve been to some less than what we would call ideal places.

In five years time I will be 68 and I trust I will still have the enthusiasm and vitality to keep on doing what I love. Getting alongside people and making their celebration whatever it might be the best possible.
