Thoughts on civil society, ceremonies and celebrations
A celebrant friend recently did a talk on Rituals in Modern Society for a local club. As the session progressed, it became apparent that the group had little idea of the role of a civil celebrant."And how do you go about planning the reception?" was one question, indicating a confusion with wedding planners. My friend's response "Would you ask that question of a minister or priest?" A civil celebrant role is to organise and conduct all the same sorts of ceremonies, as religious celebrants, only without a specific religious viewpoint. Of course if requested, civil celebrants will honour the wishes of families to include such material.
Civil funerals, baby welcomes / namings, anniversaries, birthdays, home warmings, retirement ceremonies as well as civil weddings are just some of the ceremonies celebrants may be engaged to organise.
Australia is leading the world in offering civil ceremonies - moving away from the "booze-up with a few words thrown in the middle". "Adding a Ceremony to a Celebration" is great way of creating a meaningful and memorable event for your family and friends.
